Heidelberg pH Capsule Test
Do you absorb your nutrients? Does your digestive system work properly? Do you have food allergies?
The Importance of Gastrointestinal Health pH Balance of Gastrointestinal System
What Happens To What You Eat?
The sight and smell of food stimulates water, or saliva in the mouth. Saliva contains an enzyme, called amylase, which mixes with the food that is chewed. The body is unable to make use of starch, but it can use certain sugars, even though both of these are carbohydrates. Amylase breaks down the starches into a sugar that the body can use. (More amylase is provided by the pancreas in the duodenum).
Food is propelled in the esophagus by swallowing. The esophagus is a tube approximately nine inches long, which empties into the stomach.
The stomach is a hollow, pouch like structure that lies beneath the diaphragm, which is under the ribs on the left side of the abdomen. The stomach measures approximately six to eight inches in length by three to four inches in width.
Many people think that most foods are digested in the stomach. This is not true, but digestion does begin here.
The stomach’s function is to churn food and break it into smaller particles. The normal stomach contains hydrochloric acid, pepsin, mucin and the intrinsic factor, which is necessary to absorb Vitamin B-12.
The acid and pepsin initiate digestion and the mucin coats the wall of the stomach. Mucin and other factors protect the stomach wall from digestive action. Stomach acid has effects on meats, cheese, fish and other foods. It also helps pepsin to change proteins into amino acids.
Very little of what is eaten is absorbed directly through the stomach wall - only certain minerals, water and alcohol. The stomach empties directly into the small intestine through the duodenum.
The duodenum is a segment of the small intestine, which extends several inches immediately beyond the stomach. Bile from the liver and enzymes from the pancreas are secreted as needed into the duodenum to mix with foods passing through the small intestine. These substances hydrolyze fats and split proteins and carbohydrates. Proteins are changed into amino acids and fats are broken down into glycerin and fatty acids. Starches and sugars now become glucose.
The small intestine of an adult is a muscular tube, which is approximately one-half an inch in diameter, but it is 20 to 22 feet long! It is lined with tiny, finger-like projections, called villi.
The normal pH of the small intestine is pH 7.0 (neutral) to pH 9.0 (alkaline). Liver bile and pancreatin from the pancreas need this neutral-to-alkaline condition in order to work properly for you in the breakdown of fats and converting proteins to amino acids.
We do not absorb proteins in the form that we have eaten them. They have to be converted by enzymatic action into amino acids. In healthy patients, amino acids are absorbed into the bloodstream through the wall of the small intestine. There, they are transported to cells in every part of our bodies.
The amino acids are the fundamental building blocks of life; therefore, it is equally as important for your doctor to know the pH of your small intestine as well as the pH of your stomach. Malabsorption, stomach gas, belching, bloating, flatulence and irritable bowels can be dealt with much easier by your doctor when he can monitor and record the pH levels of both your stomach and small intestine. The Heidelberg machine displays the pH on a meter and simultaneously records it on a pH Gastrogram for future reference. What can be done to learn whether you have proper pH both in the stomach and small intestine? Your doctor now has a unique Heidelberg pH Capsule System. A large number of people (more than 30%) over the age of 60 have very little or no hydrochloric acid in their stomachs. The presence of hydrochloric acid and pepsin in the stomach is essential to initiate digestion of foods that we eat.
Stomach hyperacidity, delayed emptying time, with subsequent highly acid small intestines, appear to be more common than the lack of acid (hypoacidity) in all age groups.

How does the Heidelberg pH Capsule System work?
The Heidelberg pH Capsule measures 7.1 mm Dia .x 15.4 mm Length is a high-frequency transmitter, encapsulated within a Polyacrylate (plastic) pH Capsule, and is designed, to be swallowed. The pH Capsule operates at an average frequency of 1.9 MHz. The power required to operate the transmitter is provided by a built-in, specially designed, physiologic battery. The Heidelberg pH Capsule is NOT RADIOACTIVE (Absolutely NOT). A miniature high-frequency transmitter which is encapsulated for swallowing continuously transmits the pH values from the gastrointestinal tract. The frequencies transmitted, by the capsule are picked up by the Medallion Pendant Transceiver (worn by the patient). This converts the Transmitted data to DIGITAL SIGNALS which are further transmitted to the Central Computer Interface, which is connected to the Computer and displayed on the Computer Screen. On completion of your test, the Technician will make a Print-out of your test information. This will be presented to your doctor.
There is a hospital procedure whereby a naso-gastric tube is introduced into the nose. The patient must cooperate by swallowing to allow the operator to penetrate the tube into the stomach. This is a drastic and unpleasant procedure. A suction device aspirates (sucks out) some of the stomach juices and the operator determines the pH with a lab procedure. Unfortunately, this drastic hospital procedure is not carried through to the small intestine where food conversions and absorptive processes take place. Fortunately, the Heidelberg pH Capsule does the complete job.
The Heidelberg pH Capsule eliminates the need for the “Stomach Tube”. It allows your doctor the opportunity to simply and painlessly determine these vital pH data in his office.
NO HOSPITAL ADMISSION...NO SPECIAL PROCEDURES ROOM...NO STOMACH TUBE...NO DISCOMFORT!
Your doctor will be able to do much more for you, health-wise, by putting your gastric pH diagnostic information (pH Gastrogram) together with all of your lab work, plus his physical examination of you.
Ask your doctor for more information. In the event that he feels you would benefit from this new diagnostic procedure, he will give you a special instruction sheet and have his/her receptionist set up an appointment for you.
pH plays an all-important role in how we handle and process foods to the nourishment of our bodies. In addition, medications, which depend upon pH for release and absorption, have optimal effects within the alimentary tract under normal pH conditions. Virtually everything that we eat is properly converted and absorbed in the small intestine. Due to abnormal pH profiles in many patients, sustained-release medications may tend to “dump,” or release medicaments all at once, or, on the other hand, release very little. A normal, or near normal, pH alimentary canal profile is very beneficial for food processing and medicament delivery. The Heidelberg pH Capsule is used routinely by many of the major Pharmaceutical Manufactures, in Europe, Japan, Canada and the United States, as a “design tool” in the development and formulation of pH-dependent drug releases.
MORE ABOUT THE HEIDELBERG pH CAPSULE SYSTEM
This system was developed at the famous University of Heidelberg in the city of Heidelberg, Germany. At the beginning of each Chapter in this Training and Information Manual, you will see a Screened Color Photo of the Famous Heidelberg Castle, positioned high on a hillside. The Bridge in the foreground crosses the beautiful Nekkar River and leads to the center of the City of Heidelberg. All of the development of the Famous Heidelberg pH Capsule originated at the University of Heidelberg Hospital. The first Publication included a 1,000 Patient Study emanating from the Department of Gastroenterology.
The Heidelberg pH Capsule is a microminiaturized radio transmitter, which is designed for swallowing. Well over a million capsules have been used to date. The pH capsule is activated, calibrated and then swallowed. The patient wears a Medallion 2000 Pendant Transceiver around his/her neck via a Camera strap. The pendant picks up the telemetric pH data from the patient’s abdomen. It converts the information to digital data, and then, this information is transmitted to a Computer Interface Module (HEIDELBERG MEDALLION 2000) for signal processing. The Computer Interface transfers this Data to your office computer and Color Printer.
The pH capsule IS NOT "radioactive," so there is no reason for concern. The information that is received on the graph (or Gastrogram) is compared with your medical history. Your doctor will then be dealing with more complete and essential data in his/her diagnosis. Heidelberg pH Capsules are used extensively throughout the world in Pharmaceutical research, Pharmaceutical design, Preventive and Nutritional Medical Practices, and by dozens of major Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, world-wide. There have been over 143 published clinical studies in the Archives with over 73 pertinent studies published since 1977.
Heidelberg pH Capsule Test
The Heidelberg pH Diagnostic System is a State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Tool for Measuring the pH Levels in the Digestive Tract.
When the Heidelberg pH Capsule is Activated, and Administered to the Patient, the pH Capsule will measure, and transmit the pH Levels, and the re-acidification time, of the Stomach's Parietal Cells. The Heidelberg pH Capsule is a Technically advanced Micro-Electronic Diagnostic Tool that can Accurately Diagnose a Patient who may have Hypochlorhydria, Hyperchlorhydria, Achlorhydria, Pyloric Insufficiency, and Heavy Mucus
Professor. H. G. Noeller's did a 1000 Patients Clinical Study, at the University of Heidelbergs Department of Gastroenterology, in Heidelberg, Germany. In his Study, he presented the efficacy of using an (oral) 5 c.c. Alkaline Challenge on Fasting Patients. His method was the (Oral) Patient-Administration of a 5 c.c. of a Saturated Solution of Sodium Bicarbonate.
This is the main and most meaningful purpose for use of the Heidelberg pH Capsule Test, which is used in Private Practice, and most particularly, in the Practice of Preventive and Nutritional Medicine. In the Heidelberg Technical Training Manual, there is dozens of other clinical observations, related to common G.I. problems, such as E.g.: Gastric Ulcers, Acute or Sub-Acute Gastritis, Stomach Emptying Syndrome, Dumping Syndrome, Pyloric Insufficiency, Heavy Stomach Mucus, and Delayed Stomach Emptying.
Unlike other pH tests, that require the use of Nasal-gastric tube, or Endoscopic procedure, which is very traumatic and in many cases detrimental to the wellbeing of the Patient, the Heidelberg pH Diagnostic Test is noninvasive, and very user Patient friendly.
Heidelberg pH Capsule Test
The pH Capsule is the Same Size as a Vitamin Capsule, Measuring 7.1 mm in Diameter, and 15.4 mm in Length, making it very easy for the Patient to swallow. Children, under 13 or 14 years of age, are not recommended for the test, primarily because, from our many years of experience, they will promise to swallow the Capsule, simply to please you, but when you are ready to have them swallow the pH Capsule, they virtually NEVER will swallow the pH Capsule. The Capsules are expensive, and designed for one-time use.
The pH Capsule is Tethered for Long-Term Studies of the Stomach-Parietal Cell Activity. Under Strict Clinical Research Conditions, the pH Capsule may be Allowed to Migrate Throughout the Digestive Tract. for Long Term Migratory (Oral Medications) Pharmacokinetic Studies, paralleling on-going;Digestive Tract combined;pH and Blood Plasma Levels, produces excellent Recording; Study of Scientific Curve (s) Recording. (This type of Study is limited to Pharmacology Research Studies.)
When the Heidelberg pH Capsule is Activated, and Administered to the Patient, the pH Capsule will measure, and transmit the pH Levels, and the re-acidification time, of the Stomach's Parietal Cells. You will see an accurate Diagnostic Performance of the challenged stomach's Parietal Cells Activity on the Graph displayed on a Monitor, which is recorded in the Patient Database.
