Vitamin D3 May Help Alleviate Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Health.com posted an article that says that Vitamin D3 may alleviate the pain associated with fibromyalgia. Could Vitamin D, the “Sunshine Vitamin”, lessen fibromyalgia’s crippling pain and fatigue?

Fibromyalgia is a rheumatological disorder characterized by widespread chronic pain, a hypersensitivity to pressure and fatigue. While little is known about it’s causes, some researchers believe it may be a genetic disorder or may be triggered by stress and depression.

Studies have shown that healthy Vitamin D3 levels contribute to strong bones, muscles and immunity system. Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, assists the passage of calcium through cell membranes so they may reach the bones.  Also, it regulates important minerals like zinc, magnesium and iron. A lack of this vitamin can lead to osteoporosis, poor immune system and an increased risk of breast, prostate, skin and colon cancer.

Since fibromyalgia sufferers are often less active because of the pain and fatigue, they may not go outside to receive the Sun’s free gift of Vitamin D. Much evidence exists that Vitamin D not only alleviates the pain of fibromyalgia and arthritis, but many kinds of pain symptoms associated with other disorders.
